During our wide-ranging interview we discuss his Edgar Awarding-winning novel Ordinary Grace, his 19-book (and counting) Cork O'Connor mystery series, and his latest audio book novella The Levee (set along the Mississippi River during the great flood of 1927).
Perhaps the most profound moment of our conversation is when he discusses how his writing is an attempt "to find healing from wounds," both psychological and physical.
"Forgiveness is at the bottom of it all," he says. His advice: "Embrace the brokenness. Get outside yourself. Instead of talking, listen."
