As a huge Jonny Depp fan I was eager to view this movie and was delighted when it hit the local picture house.
This third and much hyped outing finds Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) trapped in Davy Jones’s locker, whilst Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) sail off the edge of the map, whilst navigating treachery and betrayal, and making their final alliances for one last decisive battle.
At almost three hours long this movie will almost exclusively appeal to die-hard fans. Johnny Depp (arguably) has almost single-handedly made this ‘series’ and again (along with Geoffrey Rush) steals the show. The supporting performances from Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are alas wooden and uninspiring, although the poor writing and weak script play a major part in this. As with the previous outings the lack of on-screen chemistry between the pair is very apparent and you wonder just what was going on in the casting director’s mind during the audition process.
On the subject of which; Keith Richards’ much anticipated cameo appearance was short (2 minutes) and laughable.
It was very noticeable within the cinema that people were getting increasingly restless and fidgety as the film progressed. Three hours is an incredibly long time to hold people’s undivided attention, but throw into the mix poor writing and repetitive old jokes (many of which have been recycled from the first film) and you are asking for trouble. Worse still was the fact that the ending was left somewhat open and I have already heard whispers of another film in the making…
Will audiences around the globe be willing to sit through another three hours of tired jokes, tired scripts and weak acting just to ogle Johnny Depp with a long dark mane and more eyeliner than Cleopatra?!
I suspect that the females reading this review are already nodding enthusiastically!
