Border incident leaves no troops injured, but some question their role...

      Another newspaper article I found fitting to pass along, January 31, 2007.

      "Unknown assailants threw rocks at a National Guard border observation post in southern Arizona, breaking two windows on a Guard vehicle, but no one was injured, a Border Patrol spokesman said Tuesday. It was the second incident involving a National Guard border observation team this month."
     "Border Patrol agents searched for the rock-throwers after Sunday night's incident but found only tracks that led into Mexico. Assaults by rock-throwers targeting border agents are common and have seriously injured some agents, including one who lost use of an eye."
     "The soldiers involved were from the Tennessee National Guard and were part of an entry identification team, whose job is to watch the border and report illegal crossings to Border Patrol agents."
     Maybe I misunderstood our Constitution when last I read it, but I was under the impression that the National Guard was supposed to protect and or guard the borders. Why are they even being sent to protect our borders if they must remain in the background on surveillance detail? Why are they not allowed to be armed? Isn't this a rather ridiculous exercise, not to mention putting lives in danger?
     "In the earlier incident, on January 3, 2007 four soldiers pulled back from an observation post after they were approached by several armed men, who came within thirty three feet of their observation post. The soldiers called Border Patrol agents, who tracked the armed men back to the border but were not able to find them. No shots were fired."
     I say thank God no shots were fired because our people are sitting ducks! Oh but it gets better.
     "Guard officials said the soldiers were following their training and that confronting the gunmen might have led to an international incident. Officials believe the gunmen were carrying drug money back into Mexico and came across the soldiers by accident."
       Wait!! Let me just read this paragraph again. If our National Guard, who are unarmed, contronted these gunmen we might have started an international incident!!!!!!! If these gunmen present a clear and present danger, they were armed, why isn't it them who might start an international incident. After all they were just "allegedly" transporting drug money back to Mexico. Were they not in this country illegally and up to no good?
