I was watching a show earlier today and it was another study involving twins. It once again prompted me to begin thinking........
My mind began to wander back in time, remembering a variety of events that to me were quite interesting and amusing. The television show I was watching was another documentary of the study of behavior between twins. How even those who had been separated at a very early age still followed identical paths years down the road. Shows like this one always peak my interest only this time it prompted me into not only thinking and analyzing what they were discussing, but also remembering..........
Over the many years that television has been around and improved it seems the various documentaries continuously conduct studies on the twins themselves. Other documentaries that I have been priviledged to watch have been studies conducted on the parents of twins. You know, how they manage and how they develop workable daily routines. How exhausted the mothers of twins, triplets, quads are during the first six months or so.
I began to think about this and wondered why they have never conducted a study on the children of twins? If a study has been conducted, I am certainly not aware of it. Finding this rather peculiar, I began to do some research of my own this afternoon and still have not found anything remotely close to such a study.
This one hour documentary really got me going this afternoon and it must have jogged a few of the electrical synapses in my brain that triggered the past. Guess I just took so much for granted, or assumed everyone grew up as I did that I just never gave it any real thought. That is, until today. Now I will be on a never ending research hunt to find out why no such study has ever been conducted.
If you are beginning to wonder why I have become so adamantly intrigued, it is because I am the daughter of twins! For some obscure reason I now realize why everything I collect, including groceries must be in pairs. It never made any sense to me before, but now it does. I have been conditioned to pairs and just never really realized it before. It was like a light bulb suddenly turned on and I saw the double light.....
Then I began to remenber silly, insignificant incidents that occurred when I was little. Though I have both a mother and a father, it was my mother and her twin sister who raised me. Guess you could say I had two mothers and one father. On many an occassion when I was in grade school, my mother and my aunt took turns at parent teacher conferences, picking me up at school when I was sick or meeting with a teacher because I was in some sort of trouble. They would take turns and it went undetected for years.
At the parent teacher conferences, the teachers never knew the difference. They thought they were talking with my mother, but they were talking with her twin sister, my aunt and they pulled it off. Of course, I always knew the difference, but on the outside it was never picked up.
Whenever my class was going on a school trip, I never knew which one was going with me. Yet on those permission slips my mother always wrote she would be glad to participate in the class trips. Even when I would call my aunt, "my aunt" it was never picked up by the people around me. This was just as funny as can be to me. Yet the two of them always got away with it.
My grade school would always praise my mother for all of her efforts in attending everything and anything that the school was involved in, yet she didn't! My mother and my aunt traded off so many times and it always went undetected!
There were so many occassions when I would be out and about with my aunt for the day or sometimes the weekend. I can remember people from time to time talking with my aunt and commenting how her daughter, ME, looked just like her and she would just smile and say thank you! Ummmm, she is not my mother, she is my aunt!
Soooooo, now I am on a crusade and it will probably take me the better part of the next six months or so to find the answerw to my questions. If any of you are the son or daughter of twins I would greatly appreciate your input.
A little side note to all of this. My mother's mother (my grandmother) was a twin, she had twins (my mother and aunt) and my aunt had twins! I have since passed on sound advice to my children now that they are all adults. THINK TWICE BEFORE HAVING CHILDREN!
