COLORFUL SCIENCE... Has your child ever seen a volcano erupt? Probably not. Try this experiment with your child and see first hand how much fun science can be.
The materials needed: (wet dirt, small plastic soda bottle (empty), 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 cup white vinegar mixed with a few drops of red food coloring.)
Heap the moist dirt into a 'mountain shape' around the empty soda bottle. Put the baking soda into the bottle, and add the vinegar mixture. Then watch the 'lava' pour out...
Does your child know why the 'volcano' erupts? If not explain that the baking soda and vinegar react to produce carbon dioxide gas. The pressure of the gas forces the 'lava' out... (pretty cool, huh?)
