President Bush delivers his first State of the Union speech.

President Bush told Americans last week that our nation "has never been stronger." In his first State of the Union speech before Congress, Mr. Bush set out three "great goals" to keep America strong. His goals are fighting terrorism, protecting the U.S. at home and creating more jobs.

The State of the Union speech is the President's chance to introduce his plans for the year. On Tuesday, President Bush talked for 48 minutes. He was interrupted 76 times by applause!

The President discussed changes in education. "We need to prepare our children to read and succeed," Bush said. He also promised to help adults succeed. For many Americans, these are hard times. Bush said he would work to create more jobs for those who need them.

ONE STRONG NATION...

The President urged Americans to help others. He asked people to perform 4,000 hours of volunteer work in their communities.

Bush thanked the members of the military who are fighting in Afghanistan. He also thanked two new friends in Afghanistan: leader Hamid Karzai and the minister of women's affairs, Dr. Sima Samar.

Earlier in the week, the President prepared a special message for kids: "Work hard. Read. Make right choices, and follow your dreams. "That's advice every American can follow to be sure!

George Washington gave the first State of the Union message in 1790. His speech lasted just six minutes. Compared that to Bill Clinton's speech in 2000. It lasted 89 minutes!
