Raising a child on a remote South Pacific island is no easy task, especially when there are no other women nearby to give advice. And there are just some things we Western mothers take for granted that simply don’t work in the tropics.


For five years, my husband and I lived on a black pearl farm on an isolated South Pacific island, Ahe Atoll. When I returned to the farm from the States with my one month-old baby girl (I was not adventurous enough to have an island birth), I quickly discovered that I was going to have to reevaluate everything I thought I knew about baby rearing.
