When is the last time that you took time to review your relationship with the Almighty? Is your search to really know Him or just ask for everything that you need? The word relationship implies constant interaction and a connection. We are reconciled, joined to Him through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is through that connection that the relationship is established.

            The divine personality of God has so many different aspects that our minds are limited to how “awesome” God really is. He has even told us, “for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways, my ways, said the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8).  It is through our submission to the Holy Spirit, that our minds can be renewed and transformed for the mold of the world system that we exist in. “And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude].” Ephesians 4:23 (AMP).           

                        In the book of Exodus, the children of Israel had been in bondage so long that even though they had the remembrance of the promises of God to Abraham, their minds had conformed to the system of Egypt, the society in which they lived. They knew of God, but that did not know Him through a relationship. When God first introduced Himself to Moses concerning the deliverance of Israel, Moses asked His name. “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM. This is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (Exodus 31:4-15).

            In Egypt there were numerous gods with names to fit every situation. For instance, there was a god for fertility, a god for the sun, and etc. But none had any power. Moses had to ask for a name because the children of Israel could not relate or even understand because of the environment that they had existed for over four hundred years. Their minds had succumbed to the bondage of captivity and all that went with it.

            Even when Moses returned to Egypt to confront Pharaoh, he challenged the existence of God. “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.” (Exodus 5:2). Pharaoh was not ignorant of who God was because the people had been in captivity for years and had continuously spoken of their deliverance. Since Pharaoh considered himself a god, and he served multiple gods, his challenge was that God was not in his god system.

            Israel spoke of the God Almighty of their forefathers. “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known unto them.” (Exodus 6:3). God was about to introduce himself not in name only, but in manifested power. He was going to reveal himself in the uniqueness of His actions. There is nobody like HIM!

            By revealing Himself as Jehovah, He had to reveal His nature and divine personality to the Israelites. The I AM THAT I AM was enough for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their relationship with Him. The Israelites required more because of the torment of their existence.

            It is only in recent years that the Body of Christ has begun to seek out the many Hebrew names of God. Yes, we know Him as God. He is the self-existent and all sufficient one. But the revelation of the Hebrew names gives us an understanding of intimacy with Him in a different realm. Because of His immense love for us that knows no boundaries, He wants us to know Him beyond just His name as God.

            Jehovah is the revealing name of the nature of God. It is through this name that the intimacy and personal attention to your present situation becomes apparent. He is your very present help. (Psalm 46:1). Let your heart flow with His and watch Him reveal more of Himself.

            One of the most common names that we use is Jehovah-Jireh, “the Lord will provide for your need,” which is found in Genesis 22:14. Another is Jehovah-Rophe, “the Lord who heals,” is found in Exodus 15: 22-26. Jehovah-Shalom, “the Lord our peace,” is found in Judges 6:24 and Jehovah-Shammah, “the Lord is there,” which speaks of His presence is found in Ezekiel 4835. Notice that each meaning of the name begins with “the Lord.” The word Lord is translated from the word Adonai, which means master and owner, His position. This name speaks of our relationship with Him as a servant and of our commitment to Him.

            I remember once that the Lord spoke to me to say “He sees”. Immediately, I began to search the word and found El Roi in Genesis 16:13. At that point, I rested in the fact that He was telling me that He sees and He knew everything about my situation. Of course we know that He does, but when He speaks that to you it reveals a part of His personality and nature. I found a name for Him that I did not know about. If you began and continue to seek Him, expect Him to reveal those things that you cannot even imagine.

“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. (Psalm 9:10).
