Teach your children well
“Wyoming” is the face of a child I knew, who became a statistic, ejected from a vehicle – beautiful and gone way to early from this world
Yesterday in Gardner, Kansas; another accident took a child from this world when ejected from a vehicle in a head-on accident, I do not know this family, though Christmas to all who did know and love this child will never be the same. The possibility this child, was not restrained in a vehicle is a very real possibility and one of the few subject heads in life I do feel passionate about. When I was a child, wearing seat belts were a personal decision and for a child one left to the parents to enforce. Many parents, as well as my own held a belief in some form accidents were fate and sent their prayers fate such as this would not be part of their life. In the decades since, statistics have shown seat belts save lives beyond being in the hands of fate, taking fate into your own hands and those of your children while in a vehicle.
Recently, when picking up my grandson from an Olathe School I was amazed and disheartened at the numbers of small children not only unrestrained and the numbers below the 8 years old or 80 pound law being ignored by parents and caregivers. I wrote to the Olathe Police Department and Olathe Schools hoping to promote some form of change or information being distributed concerning seat belt safety, as of now I have not seen any changes taken place. Olathe Police were responsive, though alone as law enforcement they can only respond as seen in keeping the law. Change has to be made on all levels in responsibility. In the Christian faiths, children are dedicated, baptized, or christened to God with the intent of protecting and raising the child to the best of a parent’s ability, and yet putting a child into any vehicle unrestrained is a vow broken which was taken at infancy. At 13, a child is far less likely to strap themselves into a vehicle with an automatic sense of doing so if life has not prepared them to do so – at that point the sense of doing is so is usually shaken by the reality of observing a death of friend or family member.
A song from decades past by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young speaks of teaching your children well from your lessons and learning from the child as well. In a study done in the past, a change in behavior or habit forming can be done by repeating the steps of change 12 times continuously and creating a new habit. 12 times of restraining a child properly and monitoring their ability to do so for themselves with the intent of saving your child from becoming a human projectile, is it worth the steps? On a spiritual level, we recreate fate every moment of our lives with our own actions and how those actions affect another, rippling like a rock skipping over the water and creating new cycles of fate and reaction to the core change or the rock originally thrown across the character of who we are. Dedicated with the intent our lives will monitor the projectiles we have created.
A child of any age who dies from not being restrained will be remembered and for the lives of all that know them and love them they will be not only the child/daughter/son. They will evolve outside of their presence in this world to be the aunt/uncle connected to generations in the future and remembered as being the great-aunt/great-uncle someday in memory who did not live to view their linage of titles being endowed.
Long ago, a heard a trooper state he never unbelted a dead man – which was his experience and I am sure it is not always the case. Though if asked the same question of how many children he witnessed in accidents, which were thrown from vehicles and died, the count would differ greatly. Look at your children today – dream of the headlines you would choose to see in their life when spotlighted and take the effort in clicking the restraints in giving fate a chance to great only the goodness being shown. Buckle up, the time taken could change the course of many lives – including yours.
