I only had one sibling, my sister. She was older than me and when we were growing up I idolized her. As adults we went through a time of estrangement. I guess that just happens sometimes. I'm so glad that for the last five years of her life we were able to have the love of our sister. The last Christmas of her life she gave me a vase with hummingbirds on it. We both loved hummingbirds. She always had a yard full of them in the Summer. It wasn't an expensive vase, we usually just got little remembrances for each other at Christmas, but I cherish that vase. It has had a place on my dresser since she gave it to me in 2003. Through the years I've picked that vase up hundreds of times to dust it and the surface beneath it. Today I picked it up and if felt her presence so near me it seemed like I could touch her. The ones we love never really leave us, they linger near in memories and in their essence, sometimes even in a fleeting moment from inanimate objects.
Poignant. That vase brings fond memories of shared hummingbird closeness. It's the little things that mean the most.
When he had a website, I wanted to buy one of my nephew's wood-burnings that were quite good from sections of an old basswood that finally died in the yard after nearly 100 years. When I visited in 2011 he gave me a small one with an image of a bear on a tree limb that was not one of his better ones like the eagle or Indian chief. My partner placed it on a little table and I pass it every day, always wishing that I had bought a better one from him. And then, recently while cleaning, she turned it around and for the first time I saw an inscription on the back where he dedicated it personally to me. It was quite a revelation! He is taking up flying and built a workshop, so I don't think he has time for wood-burning anymore.
