Even though Carl Jung was Freud’s student, Jung created his own path by discovering what was behind the sexual desires that Sigmund Freud considered as the main motivation existent behind most human intentions.
To begin, those who are studying the relationship between these two theorists should review the focus of Freud’s work. Freud concentrated his attention on the hidden instinctive behavior, which plays one of the most important roles in the human psyche but is not accepted by the human conscience. To this day, many people accept his theory as being correct. This adherence is especially true for followers who can identify themselves in Freud’s descriptions. Typically, these are people who belong to extroverted psychological personality types based on sensations, because for them the need for sexual satisfaction is very important. With Freud keeping sexual stimulus at the center of his studies, some are able to see their personal psychology reflected in his analysis.
However, there are also people who are not dependent on their sexual desires, but instead give primary importance to their rational thoughts. These people can be both introverted and extroverted psychological types. They may identify themselves in the theories put forth by Alfred Adler, who considered the person’s ego, and his desire to prevail in his social environment, as the hidden motivation for their actions. Adler was also a student of Freud and, like Carl Jung, he abandoned his teacher’s theories and decided to develop his own methods of treatment.
Jung’s psychology is more complex that those of both his counterpart, Adler, and the mentor he had in Freud. Jung’s assertions can be applied to all people, since he discovered the existent difference between all psychological types. With this research, he was able to develop an understanding concerning why for one person Freud’s psychotherapy is adequate, while only Adler’s therapy could work for others. Carl Jung’s method of psychotherapy, because it is based on the analysis of all aspects that influence or determine the human behavior, answers the questions that the other theorists only create.
In his two-volume book The Psychological Types, Jung clearly describes all the existing psychological types, identifying their characteristics and predicting their behavior. This work asserted the idea that the human being is not as free as he may believe; his behavior follows certain patterns that predetermine his reactions, depending on the stimuli of his environment. Jung discovered an entire system that predicts human behavior depending on which of a series of psychological functions is most developed in a person’s psychic sphere.
The same evolution happened concerning the interpretation of dreams. While Freud considered dreams as mere wish fulfillment, Jung discovered how to translate the meaning of the dream messages, which then works like psychotherapy for the human conscience.
As a pioneer in the comprehension of the psychological world, Freud could not be the perfect psychotherapist and find the answers for all questions from the beginning, the same way that Jung could not give a clear answer to many questions that only the knowledge we have access to today can explain. As new theories are created, we are able to learn more about ourselves and the reasons behind our actions and thoughts. For this evolution, we certainly should thank both Freud and Jung for their contributions.
