. HPV can not only cause cancer of the cervix, but also of the vulva, vagina, anus, and penis. It is estimated that approximately 50% of sexually active men and women will acquire HPV in their lifetime.* HPV is screened for routinely in women, but not in men. There is some conselation in the fact that anal and penile cancers from HPV are rare in men who are circumcised and with a healthy immune system
Most men who contract HPV are able to clear the virus without any further development of disease. The CDC estimates that about 1% of sexually active men will develop genital warts at any given time. The subtypes that cause genital warts in men do not usually progress to cancer of the anus or penis.
