10 Techniques For Getting The Job You Want

How do you set yourself apart from your competition so that you are the one that is selected for the job? You could attend a resume writing workshop, but you end up looking like everyone else on paper. You could download from the Internet tips on successful interviewing, but most advisers do not give specific coaching on how to showcase your attributes that companies really want to know about.

     The answer?
You must absolutely execute a "total marketing package". This is an approach that is fresh and innovative; one that is tailored for you and the specific goal you want to achieve. It is all about the total package and what you can do for the company. This book reveals "Powerful & Proven Techniques For Getting The Job You Want". These techniques have produced countless on-the-spot offers and multiple job offers.

Immediately use these 10 powerful and proven techniques for getting the job you want. It is important to implement them in its entirety. Implementing portions of the strategy may not give you the results you want. Here are highlights for each technique:

Technique #1: Attract It! You have to want it badly enough to invite it

In this technique, it is changing your mindset that is first and foremost. You have to want it badly in order to attract the job you want. The book provides the thought process for achieving this.

  • Know exactly what you want and keep a focus on your goals.
  • Write them down, attaching a timeline to each goal.
  • Chunk each goal to manageable pieces within a timeline, so that it feels attainable.
  • Make these goals outrageous, such as setting your sights on a really high salary that seems impossible at the moment. Success Magazine founder, Orison Swett Marden says, "All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible." So go ahead and write a number down. It is not necessary to know exactly how you will attain it. This will be shown to you.
  • Act on it when the opportunity arises. Keep a positive and light attitude.
  • Visualize your new job, down to the color of your surroundings and the smallest detail. Know and feel that things are already at work to deliver it exactly as you had envisioned it.
  • Think in abundance at all times.
  • Protect your dreams and filter out any "noise" designed to derail and take you further away from your goals.

Technique #2: View yourself as a Product or Commodity; Use your tools differently and effectively to market yourself

Use the guideline of "viewing yourself as a product" to make distinctions on how best to present yourself on paper. You then become "choiceful" about including only information that is added value to landing the job you want. Contrary to the advice of professionals, including information such as your Objectives and the like, are in direct conflict with the goals you are trying to achieve. Focus on every single content you put down and every action that you take. Operate as if you are a company marketing a product, every action intentional; from the vision down to the smallest level of detail. Know that the purpose of the Cover Letter is to invite the reviewer to read the Resume. Know that the purpose of the Resume is to get them to call you for an interview. Alas, the purpose of the Interview is to get them to hire you. Knowing these exact goals, you can begin to craft your statements and all the messages you convey on each of these tools.

Technique #3: One Purpose Cover Letter - Create a Cover Letter for the sole purpose of getting the reviewer to read your Resume

If a Reviewer doesn't skip the Cover Letter entirely, the Cover Letter is your first opportunity to be evaluated for the job. This technique discusses several ways to get noticed, including use of special stationery, different color ink and highlighting key information designed to jump out of the page. Include the position for which you are applying and how you came about to know of the position. The most important information is a concise 1-2 sentence high-level description of your accomplishment or skill set. This statement needs to be powerful to generate interest in your Resume. Don't underestimate the power of the cover letter. Experts have written books just on this topic. Some have gone on record, saying it is sometimes more important than the resume.

Technique #4: One Purpose Resume - Design your Resume to get the Reviewer to Act - to call you in for an Interview

The resume is the most important representation of YOU as a Product or commodity. This technique discusses a resume checklist designed to ensure you a more powerful resume. This includes: using a proven innovative format; writing a summary of qualifications to convey everything about you without the need to go to the Experiences section; crafting each sentence with a certain goal in mind; designing the content to hit a set of recommended attributes. The book reveals a comprehensive list of attributes and provides specific coaching on how to present them so there is no question YOU are the one they have to call. Nail this and you'll get that interview!

Technique #5: Mass Mailer - Send your Cover Letter and Resume to many potential employers

Technique #5 is about employing techniques that increase your chance of finding the job you want. This includes sending out your resume for jobs that appear to be a fit, as well as jobs that are a stretch for you. This is an opportunity to give yourself a promotion or write your own job description. It also includes sending out your resume for positions that are not quite a fit, but you have an interest in landing a job with a particular company. This technique opens up new channels for yourself that are not otherwise open to the public. Orison Swett Marden says it best, "Don't wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them."

Technique #6: Simplify - Organize and simplify your job search activities

When you execute the previous technique, Technique #5 to its full intent (Send your Cover Letter and Resume to many potential employers), you will find that getting organized is absolutely essential. You will generate many responses. Organize your job search activities in a binder to keep job postings and Cover Letters together to make your shopping experience for the job you want effortless. As well, you will demonstrate to prospective employers or clients that you are "on the ball" when you get a phone call them.

Technique #7: Wow Them during the interview with unique and proven strategies

Technique #7 ensures you cover everything you need to think about to prepare for the interview, which includes the small bothersome things that can potentially affect your ability to get to the interview or how you do in the interview. This technique provides specific coaching for giving a solid and knock-out performance in a presentation about yourself. It includes a proven strategy for showcasing your work that has produced on-the-spot offers, additional employment choices, as well as changes to original job descriptions to accommodate your capabilities and salary requirements.

Technique #8: Plan and Know What You Want; anticipate an on-the spot offer; Go for the Gold!

Technique #8 is digging deep into details about the job you want so you do not get backed in to a job, salary or terms that, if you thought about it a little more, is not a good deal for you. This means that you did not get the job you want because you were ill-prepared with what you wanted. Know what you want, so that you know when you have reached your goal. Consider everything about the job that is important to you before walking into that interview, including salary, terms of contract, travel, cost of daycare, commute, boarding pets and benefits.

In terms of your salary, have 3 acceptable amounts to use in your negotiation. I call them Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Gold amount is your outrageously high amount and is your goal. The Silver is what you will accept as second best. The Bronze is the lowest you would accept, but only under a set of circumstances, for which you define.

Technique #9: Don't Lock The Door - Close, but don't lock the door with your previous employer - your resignation

This technique is about the proper way to leave your present company once you have found the job you want. It is also about ensuring that you do not lock the door with your previous company because they may hold the next job you want. Techniques such as asking for a performance review before you leave (if you haven't had once recently) ensures that your most recent significant contributions are part of your permanent record (if an employee).

Technique #10: Deliver on your promise! Congratulations on getting the job you want! Deliver on your promise to your new employer

Deliver on your promise to your new employer. An unknown author said, "Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work with excellence." Make your new company feel they did the right thing in hiring you. Contribute as much as you can to your company's objective. This includes focusing on results; delivering top-notch quality work; learning your new environment (politics included) so that it enables you to do good work; adding immediate value and being brave enough to speak out and do what is right for the company, even if it is not a popular stance. Be proactive in shaping your career that benefits you, as well as the company. Don't pass up opportunities for learning and further developing your skills. Employ character principles and engrain them as habits in your life. These align you with correct principles of natural law and ensure long-term success, effectiveness and happiness in your role.

Start with the end in mind, so that everything you do in life is designed to invite and attract everything you want, including the job you want. Congratulations!

I am very excited to present details on these strategies in my new book, "Powerful & Proven Techniques For Getting The Job You Want". Published July 17, 2007. Available through Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com.
