America's leaders have failed us all, not by refusing to provide free health care, free college tuition or "a level playing field." These are merely distractions from the real problem.

Why are so many professing Christians soft-pedaling sin today?  Why are so many churches going apostate?  Why are once vibrant mainline denominations embracing the grave sins of homosexuality, lesbianism, transgenderism and worse?  There are several reasons.  Some are obvious.  Others, not so much. 

Experience reveals that one reason many nominal Christians embrace gross sin is that it is in their personal interest to do so.  They lack moral authority either because they are themselves involved in sinful behavior or because they have sons, daughters, brothers, sisters or other family members who claim to be “gay.”  Since they have no concept of the holiness of God or the destructiveness of sin, compromise provides the path of least resistance. 

The rejection of truth in American culture certainly plays a primary role in moral apathy.  Ignorance of scripture and defiance of clear evidence are other factors.  People within and without the Church have adopted fallacies about homosexuality that are unproven and even refuted by scientific research.  One of these is the “gay gene” myth.  Though debunked, some still choose to believe that homosexuality is caused by a genetic predisposition.

Counterfeit morality is the currency of liberals in the government, academia and the dishonest media contributing to the problem of truth denial.  It’s known by some as political correctness, but the enlightened recognize it as the self-righteousness cloak of the ungodly.  After all, the veracity of truth is never altered by popularity, public opinion polls or feelings.
 
Far and away, the most prevalent reason that people who claim to be Christians embrace sexual perversion is that they do not read scripture for the purpose of understanding the heart of God.  Instead, they scour holy writ to locate what they think are excuses for sin or extract words from context for the purpose of shutting down critical debate.  The maxim is true that says “a text without context becomes a pretext.”

One public illustration of this tactic occurred during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal of the 1990s.  In an effort to defend then-President Bill Clinton from the consequences of his own actions, California Democrat Congresswoman, Maxine Waters demonstrated her scriptural ignorance and defiance of law by pronouncing, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!”  Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury and obstructing justice, but he was never in any danger of being stoned. 

Many more Americans today follow a false image of Christ manufactured in the minds of corrupt men than the true Son of God illustrated in scripture.  This secular Jesus condones gross sin with a wink and a nod, and never judges anything or anyone.  He is loved by all.  The absurd fabrication more closely resembles Mahatma Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, or Oprah Winfrey, than the Holy God who created the universe.  Secular Jesus can save no one, not even himself.  

Learned men and women have sought hard after truth because they knew that truth is unchanging and reliable.  In our post-modern age, feelings, opinions and personal preferences supplant reality on a wide range of political and social issues.  Soft and lazy, we have become foolish, refusing to engage lies and deception with immutable truth. 

Ghastly perversions are as common in Protestantism as ever they were in the Catholic Church.  Divorce rips apart families in churches as frequently as in the larger society, and misunderstanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ is epidemic.  In many churches, members cannot explain the gospel coherently.  America needs missionaries to our churches nearly as desperately as any pagan nation.  

The secular gospel of eternal security apart from spiritual rebirth thrives in ignorance and offends in arrogance.  When families are wrecked by domestic violence, adultery or substance abuse, experts claim a disease is to blame, or an addiction, or karma or the boogie man—anything but the real culprit—sin.  Why?  Because the truth crushes human pride.  It’s not perceived as kind and compassionate and therefore, truth is jettisoned.  Modern liberals are far too sophisticated to acknowledge sin, and for that reason, nothing improves and culture continues to decay and decline.

America’s leaders have failed us all.  The United States is financially and morally bankrupt.  Our Constitution is routinely misinterpreted by reprobate judges who create rights out of wrongs.  We are overrun by illegal alien invaders, many of whom come to rob, kill and destroy.   Government leaders, college professors, self-styled experts of every kind, and even clergy have refused to lead rightly by the light of truth.  Our culture and our people are perishing—not from lack of feelings, self-esteem or tolerance.  America is perishing from lack of truth. 

Some will deny the fundamental problem because they profit from controversy and benefit from systems that reward fraud and failure.  It seems that the smarter we think we are, the dumber we actually are. 

Being deceived is not always a choice, but remaining deceived is.  A nation can only remain free that seeks to know truth.  For this reason, truth is ruthlessly under attack by all of America’s enemies, foreign and domestic.  One great advantage of the Christian is having access to the Spirit of Truth.  He is the effective anti-venom to deadly deception and should be applied liberally to every situation.
