Richard Burton was in his thirties when some street punks said some insulting remark to him, and he started fighting. They got him down on the street and kicked him repeatedly in the back, giving him back pain for life. This probably contributed to his pill taking and alcoholism.
Think of it. All those wonderful experiences of living with Elizabeth Taylor on a yacht; making the artistic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and the exiting Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood. All that wonderful time having to put up with back pain just because he didn't pass the street punks and go off on his prosperous lifestyle.
A month shy of his 59th birthday he got into a bar fight which went out into the streets where his challengers repeatedly hit his head on the cement. He died two days later of a brain hemorrhage. One onlooker said, "Burton was murdered." (No one was prosecuted.)
I tell my James Bond Lifestyle students to NOT fight street punks with Bond-style karate. These days it's all guns and knives anyway. Besides, it's not a fair fight. If you kill him, he loses his low-class lifestyle. (And you get 20 years for manslaughter.) If he kills you, you lose your rich lifestyle, great job, home, cool girlfriend, and cash in your pocket. (He gets away.)
It's tough for men to pass up an intimidating insult or bullying from low life street punks who hang around convenience stores and gas stations looking for trouble. But your families should not spend their lives in court trying to get justice for your death. YOU should be taking your family to exciting places, teaching them enjoying them.
The next time you see a possible altercation with a street jerk, get in the car and take your family safely home. The next day take them to Disneyland and let the street punks hang around the dirty streets.

Tom’s friend meant to hit the man just to teach him a lesson, but the man fell, hit his head and died. Tom says: “That story haunts me and leaves me worrying about the place where a fight could end up.”

You gave some great advice that I learned early. During grade school we were in a bad neighborhood. Fights and bullying others was very common. I always had my twin brother with me so I didn't have to fight alone. I do recall saving him from fights with much larger bullies a time or two. I quickly learned that running was much less painful and solved the problem of being confronted 5 to 1 in an alley.
Although I have not shied away from confronting people doing bad things and stopping bullying, I have never, in my adult life, ever had to engage in a fist fight because of my paralyzed hands. Although one time I could have died when I was about 22 and trapped in a bar by an angry guy who was misinformed and backed up by at least two other guys. I managed to run. Given the condition of my neck injury, and the numbness my whole body felt when he grabbed me tightly by my shirt at the neck, I feel very fortunate that I was able to pull away and run, faster than I thought I was capable of with my nerve damaged legs.
I recall one time in San Francisco dropping in on a quaint little neighborhood bar. I knew no one so wasn't talking to anyone when a guy came in the bar and immediately started beating another guy at the bar. The flight went out in the street and the guy that came in beat the other guy bloody and senseless. I was helpless to do anything, but wished that I could. The three or four other patrons at the bar seemed unconcerned about some private battle. Seeing something like that is hard to put out of your mind, like you wrote about Tom Jones.
I do recall that Elvis studied karate and did confront a few people in places like gas stations successfully. But Elvis was always surrounded by lots of buddies that would step in if they saw he was going to be hurt.
