Here are the best DVD director's commentaries to learn all aspects of film making:

1 - Garry Marshall - Pretty Woman.  - The best commentary concerning all the realistic problems of getting the story to the screen.  You'll learn that no matter what the budget, there is never enough time or money to film all that you want.

2 - Sydney Pollack - The Way We Were & The Yakuza - Making deals,  working with actors, story editing, solving production problems.  Includes a documentary with Pollack and Barbara Streisand. The Yakuza has Pollack's great commentary with more aspects of film making and handling actors.

3 -  Richard Fleisher - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea -  He talks in depth with Rudy Belmer about all aspects of the prodcution in the commentary. The 90 minute documentary (top of this page) has interviews with many of the crew who worked on the movie including director Fleishcer and Kirk Douglas. It tells how Walt Disney risked his studio and livelihood to make the most expensive movie in the history of Hollywood at that time.

4 - Francis Ford Coppola talks on all three Godfathers in the new box set.  There's another disc full of production details.  Coppola talks about casting, studio problems, film technique, and more importantly the life of an artist. His commentary on Apocalypse Now, about producing results under great pressure with many setbacks, is a must for all filmmakers. 

5 - John Frankenheimer - The Manchurian Candidate - The director talks about camera lenses, getting production value, working with actors, and the life of a serious film maker on this masterpiece of film making.  In fact, see any DVD that has Frankenheimer's commentary, such as: The Train, The Gypsy Moths and Seconds.

6 - John Boorman - Deliverance & Point Blank  - Lots of technical information as well a working with actors and getting a production finished. Very detailed as well as entertaining stories of working with big stars Lee Marvin, Burt Reynolds & Jon Voight. 

7 - Paul Kyriazi - Death Machines & Ninja Busters - Both movies have scene specific talks about getting lots of action, special effects and exploitable subject matter onto the screen on a small budget and short scheduel. 8 - Mike Nichols - The Graduate, Catch 22 & Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf. Scene by scene discription and Nichols' personal views on filmmaking are on all three of these commentaries. Each movie is different so there's a lot you'll learn by listening as well as enjoying three classic movies.
