Because his mother’s church forbade movie-going, neither Elvis nor his father had ever been to the movies, even though there was the 800 seat Lyric movie theater in Tupelo, Mississippi. Even if the poor Presley family could have bought tickets, it's most likely they wouldn't want any church people in the small town seeing them go in.

In 1948, Elvis was 13 years old when the family moved to Memphis. That year was the release of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Elvis and his father secretly went to a theater to see it.

 In later years, Elvis said, “I’ll never forget that movie. I was sitting there with my daddy and everyone in the audience was laughing and having a good time. I figured that there could be nothing wrong with movies if they have this effect on people."

One of Elvis bodyguards said, "We arrived at the studio one day on Jailhouse Rock and there were all these beautiful actresses walking around in various costumes when suddenly Elvis calls out, 'Hey look guys. It's Glenn Strange'. We didn't know or care who he was. Elvis explained he was the Frankenstein monster in the Abbott and Costello movie."

Elvis got to meet Glenn Strange because Strange was appearing in a scene in Jailhouse Rock. He played the convict that starts the food fight. 

Side Note: That movie would also inspire Quentin Tarantino to write Pulp Fiction. Tarantino said, “One minute you’re laughing and the next minute people are getting killed. So that’s when I first got the feeling of genre mixing.”

Star Wars (1977) was almost Elvis’ last movie. He was trying to get a print of it, the day before he died, to show to his daughter. 

The last movie Elvis ever saw:

On August 12, four days before he died, Elvis rented the UA South Brook 4 movie theater. He took his semi-secret fiancé Ginger Alden, his daughter Lisa and some friends to see the newest James Bond movie; The Spy Who Loved Me.
