Schwarzenegger Used a James Bond Lifestyle Technique on Terminator 3

Arnold told this story on the Howard Stern Show.

Sometimes in business there is an opportunity that requires money that your company may not approve. Perhaps it’s buying a dinner for a client, flying someplace or putting a client up in a hotel. This might not be covered by the company expense account or the budget that your project is on.

In this case do what James Bond did in Quantum of Solace when M turned off Bond’s credit cards; Use your own cash.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was working on Terminator 3 he noticed that the scene of the terminator hanging from the crane and going through a building had been cut from the script. When he asked the producer why it had been cut he was told they didn’t have the 1.4 million dollars in the budget to do it.

Arnold knew it was an impressive scene and that it would help the impact of his character as well as the movie, so he told the director that he would pay for it. Arnold actually wrote a check for it. The scene is now in the movie, which took three days using 12 cameras.

Of course, it helps that Arnold was paid 30 million dollars for the movie and could afford it. But even when an opportunity costs a little more than you can afford, it’s important to recognize an opportunity that can change your business life and; Use your own cash.

I learned that technique when I secretly paid a stuntman for a high fall in Weapons of Death that the producer didn't want to pay for. The much needed stunt is now in the movie and the money eventually came back.

I wonder how often this sort of thing happens?
It seems like in the music industry more and more artists are financing their own work.
As Marshall Sylver says, "No risk, no goodies."

Thanks MJ. And Ron, you are so right. Bond doing that in 'Quantum of Solace' is just a 007 idea since my book uses 007 as a good example. And YES, many enterpenuer has got stuck losing personal money invested, including me many times. I mention in my 'Bond Lifestyle' book that risks are not to be taken lightly. As Yves Montage says in 'Grand Prix' "Risks are always risks." So I warn readers, that sometimes we lose lots of time and money. However, that said, if it's just a flight, room, taxi or dinner for a client, then if there seems to be a reward the risk is small. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, I don't think that Bond invented the idea of using one's own personal money to offset what the budget can't seem to afford. Many entrepreneurs have used their own money to make the difference when their company did not have the necessary cash to complete a necessary hurdle. The downside of this is that sometimes the project fails and takes the company and the investor with it.

Even the most carefully calculated risk can go awry.
