Above video is a four-minute bio of Audie Murphy.
Director Don Siegel said, "For the crazy killer in Dirty Harry' I wanted a real killer; World War 2 hero Audie Murphy."
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Audie Murphy was too young at 16 and too small at 5' 5'' to enlist in the Army paratroopers. But he tried and was probably laughed at. Days after his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Army.
At basic training, he passed out during a drill. They tried to put him in cook school, but Murphy insisted on becoming a combat soldier.
Shipped to Italy, Murphy caught malaria which he had for most of the war. Sent to France, a German machine gun nest, pretending to surrender, shot Murphy's best friend. Enraged, Murphy attacked and killed everyone in the nest. Then, using their weapons, killed every German in a 100-yard radius including two more machine gun nests and snipers.
In another fight against odds, Murphy jumped up on a burning tank and, using the 50 caliber machine gun, shot every enemy in sight. Walking away from the tank, it exploded behind him.
Murphy was wounded three times, killing 240 German soldiers, saving countless American lives. He was given every medal there was, totaling 33.
His autobiography To Hell and Back was made into Universal Studios' highest grossing movie until Jaws. Murphy played himself in the movie and had parts omitted because they were just too unbelievable.
Murphy acted in 44 movies and was going to play the Scorpio killer in Dirty Harry when, on Memorial Day, he lost his life in a small aircraft. His heroism under fire, lives saved, book and movies live on.

When I moved to this house in 1982, the house being built next door received new tenants from the absent owner who I met later, an Indian. The older man and his wife and his son were invited over to my house for parties that my new wife arranged so that we would get to know the neighbors.
The guy next door said that he and his son, they were from Kentucky, had been contracted to put in kitchens in Waffle Houses throughout the Louisiana Texas area. He rented the house until his work in this part of the country would be over and then he and his family would move on. He also told me his story: He was 14 when he wanted to work in a sawmill. So he lied about his age and said that he was 16 and got the job. Soon after starting work in the sawmill everyone was signing up for World War II, so he signed up, again lying about his age. After boot camp he was assigned to the same unit as Audi Murphy. But, while Murphy was sent to Europe, he was sent to the South Pacific. Three years later, when he was 17, his commander learned of his age. He was immediately shipped to Oregon and given an honorable discharge.
That story was so interesting it seemed unbelievable, since my father was stopped by the doctor for his eyesight and hearing. Later I heard that the first Congressional medal of honor was given to a man who had the same kind of problems with eyesight and hearing but passed a medical exam, I believe by having someone else take his place. Unbelievable things happen to ordinary people. It's a matter of the right place at the right time that makes history.
Thanks for the update on Audi Murphy!
