Don't miss the above great four mintues from Kid Galahad.
You'll see the location, all the stars, Elvis boxing and more.
Three years before Bewitched, Elisabeth Montgomery tried to be Elvis’ female lead in Blue Hawaii. Joan Blackman got the part. Blackman also got the female lead in Kid Galahad, Elvis’ boxing movie. Elisabeth’s actor husband Gig Young would get a co-starring role in it.
When Elvis found out that Elisabeth tried to get the Blue Hawaii role, he became interested in her. But she was married. However, Elvis pressed the studio to get her a part in one of his movies. When asked why, Elvis said, “I’m very envious of Liz’s husband Gig being married to her. And if she were single, I would certainly like to meet her.”
Liz’s response was, “I think Elvis is very attractive and yes if I was single, I would date him. He is not quite my type, but who knows what it could lead to? Let’s face it, what girl wouldn’t want to date Elvis? I do want to work with Elvis one day, if the studios would let me.” These remarks would lead to real boxing on the boxing movie set. And finally, a murder-suicide.
Kid Galahad was filmed in Idyllwild, CA, in the mountains north of Palm Springs. Before the movie, Elvis lost 16 lbs, training with welterweight champ Mushy Callahan who had coached Errol Flynn in the boxing movie Gentleman Jim and Kirk Douglas in Champion. Mushy said, “Elvis has a good physique and excellent coordination. He never boxed before, but he picked it up quick because of his karate training.”
So, here’s the 28-year-old Elvis in the best shape of his life in the beautiful Idyllwild mountains, when who shows up to ‘visit her husband’ Gig Young? Yes, the 29-year-old Liz Montgomery, in movie-star shape herself. She already had four movies under her thin belt, co-starring with Gary Cooper, Dean Martin and Gig Young.
When Gig Young saw his wife and Elvis deeply involved in conversation, Young went into a rage and grabbed his wife and started slapping her. Elvis stepped in and stopped it. No wonder the yelling scene in the movie between Elvis and Young was so good.
Elvis said, “I was getting so fed up with that guy that I felt like it wasn’t worth finishing the picture, but I did. I would often hear Gig giving Elizabeth some verbal abuse, but I didn’t interfere. I just hope that one day she will come to her senses. I'm just glad that the filming is finished. Personally, I never want to work with Gig Young again.”
After the movie finished, convinced that Liz had an affair with Elvis, Young’s anger got so intense with Liz that he packed his bags, left the house and they got divorced.
Young would go on to become an alcoholic and win the academy award for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? In the third week of marriage to his third wife, Young shot her and then himself.
When co-star Charles Bronson became a super-star in Europe, Kid Galahad was re-released there featuring Bronson’s name and image on the poster.
On the first day of filming Kid Galahad, his friends ordered a custom-made director’s chair as a prank gift. The back of it read ‘Mr. Presley’. Elvis turned to the cast and crew and said, “Why so formal?” The director said, “Only the best for our star.” Elvis, who wanted to be treated like one of the boys, destroyed the chair.
The next day, a new chair arrived with bright red lettering that read, ‘JUST PLAIN ‘OL ELVIS’.
Elvis laughed and plopped into the chair.
