Above video: See Jock Mahoney do the dive at 2:45, but best to see the whole fight full screen with loud sound.

According to director Vincent Sherman, "Jock Mahoney was the only stuntman in Hollywood who would do the dive off the steps in 'The Adventures of Don Juan'."

In the 1926 silent version of the movie, Don Juan, played by John Barrymore, dived off a staircase onto the villain during the final sword fight.

Because Errol Flynn, the star of the 1948 version, was a close friend of Barrymore's, Flynn asked that the dive be repeated in his version.

Of course, Flynn knew he wouldn't have to do the dive himself, so they searched for a stuntman. Only 29 year old Jock said yes to it. I talked to Vincent Sherman after reading his auto-biography. He said, "I should have done the dive in slow-motion." I told him, "No, you did the right thing because Jock flies into the villain like a freight train." Sherman was happy to hear that.

Do yourself a favor; watch the entire 3.5 min. sword fight with loud sound. Listen to those sword effects. The energizing score is by Max Steiner 'The father of movie music'. (King Kong)

That's Robert Douglas as the villain. That massive set was done without budget permission and needed massive power to light.

By today's movie standards, that leap, while dangerous, did not seem to be too much. I assume that the guy on the receiving end was also a stuntman. Falling back on a hard surface can crack one's skull wide open! I never found of those swordfights, or for that matter, karate fights, being a wrestler in high school and college, as realistic or even entertaining… Usually hoping that they would get over quickly when they were so often drawn out for dramatic effect.

I had to take it back down from full screen because it became so pixelated on this 24 inch monitor.
