Above is a concise seven-minute bio of Chaney & his movies. Below article has 'inside' info.

"A man's face reveals much that is in his heart and mind. I attempt to show this with the make-up I use. The make-up is merely the prologue." Lon Chaney

Lon Chaney was voted Most Popular Male Film Star of 1930. His roles in silent movies included ‘The Hunchback of Norte Dame’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’. (I’ll spare you the images.)

Not wanting to fall into ‘the movie star trap’, Chaney never went to film premieres or signed autographs, except for answering all mail from prisons. He gave the rest of his fan mail to his ‘private secretary’ which was a trash can outside his office.

Chaney told a fan magazine, “Vanity is a personal parasite that must be feed until it has gorged itself and renders the victim a failure.”

Other than the fan mail, Chaney had a generous reputation, giving Christmas gifts to studio staff and crew members. And when an electrician’s mother needed an operation, Chaney paid for it.

Known as ‘The Man of 1,000 Faces’ Chaney did his own make-up, moved props and lights, and even helped with the make-up of extras. One extra he helped with his makeup was 36-year-old William Pratt.

Chaney gave him a lift home one night. On the way, Chaney told William, “The trick in this business is to do something totally different from the rest, so they’ll take notice of you.”

Six years later, at the age of 42, William Pratt, now Boris Karloff, would do ‘something different’, also in makeup. And ‘they’ did take notice of him.

Lon Chaney will always be remembered for those images that he created for himself in makeup without the tricks that current filmmakers have available. I didn't know that he only played in silent films. But I did know that many silent film stars failed when talkies came along. He certainly had an outstanding career before dying at such a young age of 47.

Thank you for sharing with us some of his personal life as well. A star that was kind and generous both on the set and beyond. Answering only letters from prisoners. Very commendable.

Ron
