When John Casablancas started his Elite Modeling Agency in NYC, it set off the now famous 'Modeling Wars' between him, the Eileen Ford Agency and others. Casablancas had hired away one of Ford's managers, thus setting her against this Johnny-come-lately. She sued him for 7 million dollars.

Casablanca's said;

"Ford even sent the migration people to my office. But how could they have known that me, the French-Spanish-Mexican playboy with a name like Casablancas, was actually born an American, just a few miles away from her country house."

Casablancas had models, such as Christie Brinkley & Paulina Porizkova making $500,000 a year. The agency itself was bringing in 100 million dollars a year.

Casablancas said,

"When I started the agency, I used the Hollywood studio system from the 1940's as an example. They would build up a star from A to Z and control everything from their looks, to personal appearances and press.
