Susan Oliver has 128 film & TV credits. On the same day Buddy Holly died, she was on the Pan Am flight that lost power and fell from 35,000 ft. to 6,000 ft. before regaining power. For a year, she turned down acting jobs that required her to fly to location.
Susan underwent hypnosis to stop her fear of flying. LA newsman Hal Fishman took her on an evening flight in a Cessna 172. The next day she signed up for flying lessons.
In 1966, when preparing for a transatlantic flight, she was a passenger in a Piper Cub that flew into wires and flipped over because the pilot was showing off. Both survived. But that didn’t stop Susan. She became the fourth woman to fly a single-engine plane across the Atlantic solo.
She got a Lear Jet license and flew some charters, as well as a commercial pilot license for multi-engine planes, and a ‘glider rating’. She was voted Pilot of the Year after co-piloting a Piper Comanche and winning the 2,760 mile transcontinental Powder Puff Derby.
Susan also directed episodes of Mash & Trapper John. Known for her portrayal as an Orion slave girl on TV’s Star Trek, the 2014 documentary on her life was titled The Green Girl.
