Movie director Peter Bogdanovich started out as a film journalist. Roger Corman hired him to co-write the Peter Fonda biker movie The Wild Angels, and also to direct the 2nd unit. Next, he directed Targets starring Boris Karloff which was a critical success.

He gained huge popularity at age 32 writing & directing The Last Picture show that earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Director & Best Picture.

He had great success with What’s Up Doc starring Barbra Streisand & Ryan O’Neil, considered the best comedy of its time.

Next was the commercially & critical successful Paper Moon starring Ryan O’neal and his daughter Tatum. Then came Mask starring Cher & Eric Stoltz.

Directing his movie St. Jack in Singapore about an American pimp living there, Peter said:

“I was moved emotionally by two of the real escorts playing parts in the movie, asking how they came to be escorts. I asked them if they had enough money, would they promise to quit the business? They answered yes, so I paid them the equivalent of $20,000 each in today’s money. And they did quit and flew back to their hometowns.”

Later, Peter used the idea of paying an escort to quit the business in his movie She’s Funny That Way.

When Peter started his seven-year relationship with his Last Picture Show star, Cybil Shepard (Taxi Driver), the couple appeared on every TV talk-show gushing over their mutual love. Finally, Cary Grant told Peter, “Stop going on those talk-shows. People don’t like it.”

“But I thought ‘everybody loves a lover’,” Peter said.

“No, they don’t,” Grant retorted.

Peter is also an accomplished film historian with ten books and documentaries on John Ford & Buster Keaton.

About directing, Peter said,

“Young directors coming from MTV or commercials have no sense of film grammar. There’s no real sense of how to tell a story visually. It’s just cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, you know, which is pretty easy.”

Now with 34 directing credits & 56 acting credits, his new comedy One Lucky Moon is in pre-production.

On Sept.26, 2021, Peter will attend the City of Angels Women’s Film Festival awards banquet to be honored for his “strongly crafted, unforgettable female characters”.

The festival will screen Forbidden Power that is in competition. The movie has lots of designed shots, as opposed to ‘cut, cut, cut, cut’.
