There’s a new kid in town. New Yorker Sujewa Ekanayake is vying for the city’s resident writer-director-actor slot, previously held for 45 years by The Woodman with his Annie Hall Best Picture win.
Ekanayake has taken an Annie Hall-on-steroids character and sat her down at a Dinner with Andre table. But instead of the Wally character ‘totally motivated by fear’ according to that actor, Ekanayake is in total control, even when Annie calmly says coffee-spitting shock comments with a straight face.
Ekanayake’s movie, The Secret Society of Slow Romance, goes much further than the Louis Malle movie by having his conversation-driven relationship taking place over several meetings. The dating excursions around New York City gives breathing room to the comedy-drama, unlike Andre’s continuous dinner.
Instead of two men-friends talking, Ekankayake’s movie has the man-woman dynamic that naturally sexes up the conversation.
Ekanayake himself plays the man, with actress/musician Alia Lorae playing the woman. She's planning to make a movie and slowly becomes interested in the cool, philosophizing indie-filmmaker that lends her his microphone.
The Secret Society of Slow Romance, filmed in wide-screen perfection, is now released on Vimeo. It will start its theatrical run in April.
