From the beginning, Rob and Patricia have a shaky relationship. He is married, and has a 2-year-old son he adores. Still, the two allow themselves to become emotionally and physically involved. Soon however, Rob goes back to his wife in an attempt to save his marriage and make a home for his child. Patricia is devastated … but not for long. Rob’s attempt at reconciliation fails. When he returns to Patricia, she is sure they will be together forever. Owens’ book chronicles a rollercoaster relationship between two people who, though powerfully attracted to one another on a physical level, never quite manage to create a life together.  Patricia is unable to let go of Rob, even after she marries and has a family with another man. Rob, on the other hand, seems quite content in the role of lifetime bachelor.It is a heartbreaking story of a woman’s unrequited love and a sadly unfulfilled longing … up to and including death.
However, the story feels like a memoir. Written entirely in narrative –which occasionally drifts from third-person to first, cementing the impression of reading a memoir. The author’s passion is unmistakable. Her insight into human emotions is wonderful, and the novella is an interesting, heart-touching read. Busy readers will appreciate its brevity, and the romantic heart will savor the bittersweet taste of love unfulfilled. An enjoyable read.
