Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (vv 4-6)

The child of God who walks in the path set out by His Holy Spirit has nothing to fear. God's word is our guide and light as we traverse the darkness of this earth. We find comfort in His word, and direction through the gentle leading of His Spirit - so that even when death appears in its most terrible form, we are assured of our destiny and need fear no evil.

It is imperative that we be immersed in God's word, and familiarise ourselves with the voice of the Holy Spirit, so we can be clear about what He is saying at all times. He has promised to instruct us on life's journey, even if this is through the dark valley of the shadow of death, but unless we hear His voice (by His word and/or Spirit), we may not have the assurance we need for each moment.

As we continue walking with the Lord, we receive the promise of plenty. He lays out a feast before His servants as the enemy looks on. While the enemy's plan is to obstruct God's children and prevent them from enjoying life (John 10:10); our God intends that we live abundant, joyful lives. He delights in the prosperity of His servant (Psalm 35:27), and wants us spiritually and physically healthy (3 John 1:2). The will of God is not only that we enjoy life, but that our cup overflows. His oil of joy and gladness washes over us as we follow in His footsteps.

Realising this gives us the full assurance that His goodness and unfailing love will be with us forever.

The Lord appeared from of old to me [Israel], saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you. (Jeremiah 31:3 Amplified)

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. (John 15:9-10)

The believer in Jesus Christ has been adopted into spiritual Israel, and is truly loved of God. Relax in the arms of the true Shepherd and trust in His love; and when your path seems truly dark; remind yourself that your destination is His eternal presence!
