Three hours South, summer begins. One hundred and seventy five miles into the heartland the sounds of the Somernite’s cruise series kicks off. Route 27 in Somerset Kentucky becomes home to the assortment of classic cars and trucks for the weekend. The first show of the season for the Somernites Cruise series kicks off with the Wal-Mart block party. As I turned off of route 27 into the Wal-Mart parking lot a line of Corvettes sat with hoods open for spectators to view the classic American Sports Cars.
A Big block nova idles past as the loud mufflers cancels out everything else around. A 1957 Chevy glides into the last open spot in the lot. The Show starts at 6:00pm and fifteen minutes later there is not an open spot left in the roped off show area. I cruise over to an open spot with the other classic hotrods trying to find a close position for the show. There are no strangers as friends and family take in the sights of the classis cars and trucks.
The band Klassyc Tymes keeps the dance area full as they played a variety of old time favorites. Young and old danced and swayed to the great sounds from the band. A family friendly event that takes place the third weekend of every month starting in April.
On Saturday, historic downtown Somerset closes the streets from 2:00 to 8:00 pm for the cars to take positions throughout the town. Over a thousand show cars and trucks attended the show this weekend. Parking lots and downtown streets became the showplace for the show cars and trucks. The cool air and clouds gave away to a beautiful sunny day as the hotrods sat on display.
Come for the day or come for the weekend. There is enough activities from Thursday to Sunday to keep you and your family entertained.
