Norm Applegate is an inventive writer with a smooth style. He is not shy to create a very different premise for a thriller and a series - Into the Basement is the 1st in the Kim Bennett series - she is not your ordinary heroine - she is a Dominatrix in San Francisco and is one tough lady.
She is called into a police case of missing persons who all seem to 'be in the industry' - Kim is able to easily go in adult XXX places - and look around...
A very bad guy, Wong Lee, has a Russian thug kidnap women (to Wong's specifications) and takes them to his kinky chamber of horrors - in the basement (hence the title) - Wong is a very sick puppy who has been into human trafficking, drugs, and now into films, snuff films...
This is a very adult thriller with an edge - There are graphic sex, violence, and domination scenes -
something you don't read every day, but it fits in with this story -
You end up rooting for Kim Bennett - she is a strong woman who has her own sense of purpose to find and save the kidnapped girls if she can.
The next in the series is Into the Spell, another taut outing for Mr. Applegate -
These books look like the next generation thriller - explosive, adult, with surprising twists and turns, and above all, scary.
