REVIEW: Poetess Victoria L. McColley’s PATTY POET Forever Friends is a child sized, kid friendly, lyrical offering for pint sized reader/listeners. Patty Poet takes the reader to the land of poetry as she encounters Sally Sonnet, Randy Rhyme and Tony Time.

Osage County First Grade Little Reviewers eyed the bright colors found on the cover of Rhymester McColley’s Patty Poet. As 8 budding poets hurried to the rug for listening all attention was on the volume I held in my hand. Children revel in simple and delightful exhibitions of their own world, colors, toys, animals; simple facets they most recognize and understand always hold their attention.
Patty Poet Lyrical Rhymes for Children begins with a colorful Plump Plums, as Little Poets follow smiling honey bees to Tangy Tangerines and Yellow Yams. More child pleasing color is found in Little White Daisy in bright green fields, next to oranges being peeled, soft yellow petals and purple grapevine.
Do not step on the grass finds Amy swinging from a rope swing, she was playing on the tree; Swinging with Little Jeremy and touched her feet to the sky. Rope swings and fun with siblings or friends is something Little Poets understand well.
Little Brown Squirrel, Rainbow rainbow up in the sky, Inside my messy toy box, and Icy snowflakes are all themes Osage County First Grade understand, recognize and enjoy.
Osage County First Grade especially expressed their delight for ‘Hello sky of crayola dreams, Red bird chirping in the tire swing, Yellow sunshine kissing my cheeks, Listen while the blue bird speaks. This delightful ode is accompanied by a facing page graphic showing a childlike sun, fluffy clouds and plump blue bird carrying a small bit of olive branch all set against a gentle blue sky. Just a touch of green grass is seen below. The poem itself is bordered, top, bottom and right with an array of child pleasing graphics, the sky grassy vista filled with flowers and a perky blue worm providing the balance for a trailing vine and more flowers, sunflowers, and daisies are readily recognizable, as are purple cone flower and water lily which dot Oklahoma roadways and farm ponds.
Daring Darius, One son Branton, Sweet Baby Daisia all penned for the versifier’s grandbabies brought child comments including ‘she is a good grandma’, ‘she really loves her grand children’ and ‘maybe my MeMe will write a poem for me’.
Little Puppy, followed me home, a fun rhyme about mud and giraffe’s nose and trees and monkeys, as well as building a fort, and food are all themes bringing smiles and joy filled eyes as Little Poets view the graphics and listen to the words.
Food including Peanut Butter sandwiches and chocolate milk, in addition to marmalade and tangerines round out the work. Osage County First Grade KNOW peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate milk!
Patty Poet likes to rhyme, and Randy Rhyme rhymes all the time, Sally Sonnet lost her bonnet and Tony Time is on his way to mars.
All in all Patty Poet ‘Forever Friends’ is a delightful beginning poetry work especially dedicated for the younger set. Nineteen double face odes, ballads, sonnets and verses feature a full page graphic and an elegy bedecked with more color and interest. Themes are child friendly.
All children’s books I receive for review are presented to my Little Reviewers, Osage County First Grade. It is wonderful to see Little Listeners gather, pay attention carefully and take their job as a reviewer very seriously. Rapt concentration, discussion and babble of six year old voices as Little Reviewers discuss what they like the most is always part of the exercise.
Osage County First Grade pronounces Patty Poet ‘Forever Friends’ to be a good book ... a high accolade from six year olds! They liked the graphics, vie to take the book to their Reading Offices, cardboard boxes some might think, for DEAR reading time, and try their own verses, rhymes and drawings at the work table.
I particularly like the pages at the back of the book where Little Poets can try their hand at a rhyme or two of their own. These pages are lined, helpful for beginning scribes, and are detailed with bright eyed little girls cheering the budding poet to greater heights.
