Destressing the Holidays
Ashira R
The Holidays are a joyous celebration filled with gatherings of family and friends. The bustle of shopping and the dancing lights on every street corner. The house is always filled with the smells of baking and the excitement of children is engaging. Right? For some that is true , for others the holidays are the most stressful time of the year. With the shopping that needs to be done, the baking that needs to be done, the parties to attend and sometime in there the quiet time gets lost.
In times when the expectation of the season is upon us we forget to stop and take some time out for ourselves. We let others take away the enjoyment by putting pressures on us - expectations. Here are a few tips to help you truly celebrate the season and avoid the holiday blues.
1. Physical tension is wrapped up tightly like a little bow and we forget to pull the bow and release it. We race around the parking lot trying to find a space, our shoulders tighten as we listen to someone argue they saw "it" first and we hold on to it. Remember to breath deeply. Fill up your lungs with air and let it out slowly. This is one of the simplest tension releases known to man, yet we forget to use it daily. It will help your entire physical body relax. Until your physical body relaxes you can not begin to relax the mind.
2. Emotions of the holiday run the full spectrum. We have family gatherings to office parties. You can not find the perfect gift or you lost the argument of who saw "it" first. We try and grin and bear with it letting our emotions bottle up to a point when we are no longer celebrating but melting. Limit the amount of time you spend with extended family and co-workers. You will find that more is not always better. Sometimes it is the quality that counts.
3. Eggnog, peanut brittle and fudge are always on the menu. Try and watch what you eat. Things that have high sugar can actually cause you to have different emotional reactions to situations around you. Watch the amount of alcohol you intake - it too contains sugar. Try to find healthy alternatives to bring to a party. Even if you are the only one who eats them.
4. Sleep is a long forgotten ritual during the holidays. We try to put so much into a four week period that we often eliminate the most important aspect of rest. Strive to maintain a balance of sleep habits. The routine will also help maintain your balance in the emotional department.
The holidays can be a joyous celebration if we watch out for these four simple tips.
