CHAPTER ONE
Jessica Robbins woke up feeling bad on that cold bitter January morning. Her body ached all over. She felt like she’d been beaten up by a pro boxer.
“Oh great,” she sighed, “this is a helluva time to catch the Flu. I’ll stop by Charley’s drug store and get something for this; before it gets any worse.”
She went into the bathroom and filled the tub for a hot bath to soak her aching body. Before she got in, she went into the kitchen and fixed a pot of freshly ground coffee. She had to have at least two cups before she went to work; that was her routine. She kept reminding herself she had to work; sick, or not. She knew if she didn’t she couldn’t pay her bills and the mortgage on her house would lapse.
She stepped out of the tub, wrapped a towel around her body, walked into her bedroom, put on her blue dress, and then went into the kitchen where the aroma from the coffee was wonderful. She fixed herself a hot cup, added cream and sugar, and then set it on the table. She walked to her front door, opened it, then bent with a groan and got the Harlan City Daily Chronicle off the steps. Inside, she eased into a chair by the table, spread the paper in front of her, and read on the front page, printed in large black letters:
Serial killer still at large in the rural area of Harlan City;
Eight women, brutally raped and murdered in the past three months, have the citizens of Harlan City staying closer to their homes. Each of the victims found had two things in common: they were a single woman, living alone, and a page from the telephone book, with a line drawn through their name, was attached to their body. Police Detective Ronnie Bailey is offering a ten thousand dollar reward to anyone willing to come forward with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. The Harlan City and Kentucky State Police are doing everything in their power to put a stop to these killings.
Fear built in the lower part of Jessica’s stomach. She lived alone and her phone number was listed.
