Article was written with the intention to instill renewed passion and hope within those who feel that they have sat idle as life has passed them by.
Have you ever asked yourself, “How will I be remembered once I have passed on? What will I leave as my legacy? How will my children and my grandchildren think of me?” This can be an intimidating, and for some, a depressing thought.
You may believe that you have allowed life to pass you by, that you have squandered precious time and, like Phil Berquist in City Slickers, consider the balance of your life as a ‘do-over’. A common theme of Henry David Thoreau’s writings is that many in this world ‘lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them’.
Here’s the good part: If you are reading this, then you are STILL alive! In his poem, Walt Whitman reminds those despondent about the human condition that as long as they draw breath, they, personally and individually, can make a difference, “…that you are here, that life exists…that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse”.
Speak these words out loud and with conviction: “I was made for such a time as this. This is a time during which heroes and heroines are made. I am among a generation of Americans who understand that my human rights and American liberties are under assault by out-of-control government. The one beacon of light to the world is gradually being extinguished and the success or failure of this threat is inextricably interwoven with my personal destiny! I will act on behalf of my children and future generations! Regardless of what has gone before or what choices others make, I resolve to take an aggressive stand for what is just and good! With God’s help, I will not fail!”
The call to save our country will only be answered by a few. If you choose to rise up and get involved, you will never carry the heavy burden of regret. It is waiting to be written, it is waiting to be sung…your verse, your song.
