Why do we accept political generalizations?

Why do we accept political generalizations? It seems to me that Republicans are mainly generalized as extreme conservatives with all the same beliefs. It seems to me that Democrats are generalized as extreme liberals with all the same beliefs. Both generalizations I have found could not be farther from the truth. In my opinion both generalizations are no different than any other form of discrimination. Thoughts?
