President Obama said, in a recent speech, that every thirty seconds a family goes bankrupt due to the lack of health care.  I ran the math and it looks like this: 

1 ever 30 seconds

2 a minute

120 an hour

2880 every day

20,160 weekly

80,640 every month

1,048,320 in a year’s time

(Wow! I wonder how many years this has been going

on.)

Now, evidently, I’m the only person who has taken the time to run the numbers, or else I’m the only guy who wonders if it's even possible to reach such horrific numbers of bankruptcies based on the lack of health care alone.  I say that because I haven't heard a single soul question it. 

I know what can happen if a person is confronted with horrific medical bills after he or someone in his family is forced to undergo major surgery.   It happened to me after my heart surgery.  However, over one million bankruptcies a year? 

Really?

Now I can agree with everyone else who says that the president is a great orator, but I think it’s long past time to get beyond his ‘eloquence’ and start actually ‘listening’ to what he says.  To me, this ‘statistic’ is very hard to believe.  It seems like one of those figures pulled out of the air in order to make a greater point. 

Now, I don’t know for sure that this isn’t true , of course, but I’d say it bears some looking into, or at least maybe someone in the press could ask him for his resources.  But I don’t suppose that will happen anytime soon.
