Is the United States on the brink of a revolution?

According to Serbulent Turan, an Instructor in Political Science & Public Scholarship Coordinator, at the University of British Columbia, there are several signs that the United States is about to undergo a revolution. Turban says in his article entitled, Is The United States On The Brink Of A Revolution? * that there are at least three criteria that precede a revolution. They are:

Tremendous economic inequality.

A  strong belief that the ruling classes  “serve only themselves at the expense of everyone else, undermining the belief that these inequalities will ever be addressed by the political elite.”

In “response to these, there is the rise of political alternatives that were barely acceptable in the margins of society before.”

He further claims that, “Combined, these factors create a deeply felt and widely shared sense of injustice, an almost palpable conviction that the system is not working for the majority and only for the very few who abuse their positions of privilege.”

Sometimes we will see this revolution demonstrated by more protests, larger protests and a rise in fascism.

More protests

According to Turan, before any revolution there is an increase in the number of protests. Before most major revolutions, there’s a substantial increase in the number of protests, marches and petitions. 

Bigger protests

Unaddressed, these protests will become large. He warns that if people conclude “that the system is not working, and their grievances will remain unheard, then almost anything can set off a political explosion.” Some historical triggers are technological inventions such as the printing press or the Internet. Others are social movements that grow so swiftly that they cannot be contained by the authorities. Examples are the Protestant reformation or the English Civil War of the 1640s or the Arab Spring caused by a young man resisting corrupt police.

He also predicts that protests will evolve into resistance and violence. “If their concerns remain unaddressed, these protests become more extreme: petitions become strikes, marches become violent uprisings. Resistance becomes a daily fact of life and political organization commonplace.”

One of the largest protest in history was the Woman’s March and Occupy Wall Street sprung from an idea of a small group of people. Unfortunately, most of the conditions that created these protests still continue and are even worse.

 Corruption of law enforcement

Corruption of law enforcement agencies is not new. There has always throughout history been agencies and individuals who were corrupted. Its racism, has been clearly demonstrated.

Turan claims that this is more than a lack of trust. There is an increasing cynicism about the neutrality of law enforcement. ICE, he says, is building training centers for officers to handle urban warfare.

Rise in fascism

Although we had a brief period of fascism before the Second World War, this time it’s different; the government is not only allowing fascism but is praising it i.e. Charlottesville.

Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an “ORGANIZATION OF TERROR.” Portland is being watched very closely. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!

A revulsion of capitalism

Turan also adds: People are losing the belief in capitalism’s ability to work for everybody. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are centering there campaigns around the failures of capitalism. They promise structural change as well as ending the submission of Washington to the rich and powerful.
