Why do we tolerate this insane behavior?
Stupidity reigns. I just don't see where the Koch brothers are coming from. Oil is supposed to be gone in a hundred years or so. Why fight renewable energy when it's the wave of the future. We should have cold fusion by 2050 if not sooner, that is if fossil fuels don't destroy the environment before then. Isn't sixty billion enough for these guys? Then there's the gun nonsense in California. People are buying assault weapons in droves because Governor Brown passed legislation barring them in 2017. What about the 33,000 people who died last year because of gun accidents, suicide or murder? That's almost as many as those who died from car accidents. And you just made it easier for criminals to get a gun, as you did in Chicago when you destroyed their gun control laws. You'll get bored with those dangerous toys, leave them lying around, and somebody will steal them, or worse, your kid will get ahold of one of them.
The vast majority of people follow the social mores around them and go through the motions, accumulating stuff, procreating, recreating and then, dying. Here in the United States, most people are far from basic survival. There are even safety nets for people on the street if they will accept them.
We, the fiction writers of the world, have created all kinds of fantasy that used to be only available in hard copy books and celluloid movies. However, with the advent of comic books to dumb down fiction, larger-than-life characters appeared and scenarios were drawn that had no reality except the authors and their fans. Education picked up on all this additional information and tried to incorporate it into the schools. The basics were watered-down and it was easier to get by or to cheat.
Next came the television and computer explosion of options and access. People could idolize whoever or whatever they wanted. They could become Dirty Harry, Spock, or a captain of industry simply by wanting to imitate them. Those in need always idolize those who have. We seem to be enamored with being rich and the lottery proves it.
The Internet has placed information at our fingertips. We have to learn what is good information and what is bad. I think we are at a cusp in our transformation into a global humanity and are having a hard time throwing off old ideas to make it. Generations from now, they will look back and wonder why so many were so stupid.
