Although an independent, I cannot support another Republican in the 2008 Presidential election regardless of who obtains the nomination. My husband, a life-long Republican, feels the same way. Our fear is a Republican President will mean that key government agencies will continue to be run by representatives of the very industries they are charged with regulating. The interests of the people are not served when this occurs.
The ever-expanding use of private contractors to carry out the functions once performed by government employees and the military is the most obvious way the neocons are dismantling the government. Clearly, however, using the power of the President’s Office to neutralize important federal regulatory agencies by placing industry representatives at their helm is another powerful tool to assist them in their mission to make government for the people a thing of the past.
Transferring control of federal agencies to corporate leaders ensures nothing interferes with today’s obscenely paid executives’ efforts to increase their bottom line—frequently at the expense of the environment, the American worker, the consumer and even World Peace. How fortunate the far right has found a way to employ the power of the Presidency to transform government for the people into government for corporate profits. Of course, I can't be sure a Democrat in the White House will reverse this dangerous trend, but I am sure another Republican will not.
In my novel, The Founding Five, five wealthy and powerful men conspire to dismantle government so they can rule the nation. Privatization is the primary tool they use to accomplish their goal. Although The Founding Five was intended to serve as a warning, it appears it may become an accurate portrayal of what the future holds for this country if the neocons have their way.
