Author John Flanagan was born in England of Irish parents and his knowledge of the novel's locales and the area folk add an unmistakable richness to the characters, lifestyles and locations that lacking his background, would not be possible. From the daily chores, customs and goings on of the Irish farming family McDermott and the nearby village folk, John paints a marvelous canvas of characters. He will hold you intrigued with the mysterious character and doings of Henry Davidson, the wealthy English businessman that will forge his mark indelibly on the life of Rose McDermott when they wed. Henry Davidson is a cold calculating man seeking an heir for the Davidson family name. Rose, is seeking love, communications and stability. The marriage quickly begins to fall apart as Henry's true nature and secret lifestyle emerges. John expertly builds the characters and moves them in and out of the story while holding your attention in anticipation of the next event. John has woven his dialog expertly and seamlessly into the fabric of the story in a manner which enhances but does not dominate the story.
