Craig Schley challenges Charles Rangel for his seat in Congress - U.S. Congressional District 15, which encompasses Harlem, Upper Manhattan and parts of Queens. Residents appear to be ready for a change!
Craig Schley is a newcomer to most people in these parts, even though he is a 20 year Harlem resident, former political advisor to Felipe Luciano, former Charles Rangel intern, and current Executive Director of VOTE People for Change (Voice Of The Everyday People For Change) - an organization that continues to act on behalf of the Harlem community, including fighting against the rezoning of 125th Street. Nonetheless, Harlem and Upper Manhattan residents have expressed discontent with their current Representative - Charles Rangel - who's held the position for twice as long as his challenger has lived in Harlem, and almost as long as the 45 year old contender has been on the face of the earth.
Most people in this district feel that Rangel has done little to protect their interests - particularly the residents of Harlem. He is the self-proclaimed "Mayor of Upper Manhattan", has gone largely unchallenged for much of his political career, spent at least his last term embroiled in controversies, and gets re-elected every two years on name recognition alone. This exuberant election, however, has awakened a sleeping public, and with "change" flailing around in the air, the constituents of Harlem are looking for a bit of change of their own.
Enter Craig Schley. As he campaigns throughout the area, he is finding that most people are not as concerned with the fact that they know little about him as one might think. Their discontent with Rangel overshadows any concerns with the newcomer - voters are willing to take the chance, based on heart alone. Craig proves, however - although his campaign is underfunded and understaffed and he may not be able to reach all of the District's nearly 700,000 constituents - that he is a man of commitment, learning, and passion. Most people who have had the opportunity to meet him, readily offer their support. And, though Rangel may be Goliath in this battle, it is my humble opinion that the incumbent is not taking this lightly.
And, we all know what happens to Goliath.
