How many times have you been married? How many times divorced? Everytime you get married and divorced you now have collected one more name. If you have answered yes or no to any of these questions, read on.

Tonight I was at a meeting and had to sign a roster. The woman who signed her name ahead of me on the roster hyphenated her name. She is recently married and decided to keep her maiden name. One man had to make a remark about the hyphenated name. She started laughing and said, “I have several more names I was married once before and, I legally changed my name in between marriages."

We all started laughing at this - but the truth of the matter is - we can collect names like candy. It is very easy for anybody to go before a judge and change their name to something they like - other than settle for something they were born with or married into.

Of course you have to find changing all your pertinent identification for example: drives license and social security card to mention a couple of issues - requires stacks and stacks of paperwork.

I agree, with my friend, if I ever remarry I would hyphenate my name. Why should I lose my identity because I decided to marry again?

The people who get married, and married and married have so many names it’s a wonder they can keep track of them. I wonder if their documentation is always up to date. When there are children involved, the children usually have different last names which leads to confusion, at school, in their split family lives, in their children's minds, and living in general.
