Do you know anybody who has had a remarkable life? Do you know a senior who is still active? Do you know a man who instead of sitting in a rocking chair is rocking the chair?
I wrote an article about a friend of mine the title was, “85 Year Old Man Learns How To Read.” This was his dream throughout his adult life. He never had an education as a child. He started into a beginning reading program through the city school system.
He managed to work in several jobs during his lifetime without being able to read or write. Bob worked as a policeman, hotel manager, and a cement mason.
At the age of 85 years old Robert H. Perez is in great physical and mental health. His life has drastically changed. His dream of being able to read is now being accomplished by a lot of hard work on his part.
On February 2nd my friend, Bob, was honored at the Recognition Dinner and Awards Ceremony, dubbed “An Evening with the Stars,” which was held at Balboa Park in San Diego, California.
At this dinner Bob received three (3) awards for his reading achievement. His self-esteem soared and I do not think he has come back down to earth since.
The Observer a community newspaper made Robert H. Perez the cover story on their March 2007 newspaper. His picture was on the front page and there were three (3) pages devoted to Bob and his remarkable life story.
Bob was in the Navy during the Second World War. He served on the U.S.S. Reno (CL-96). He was in five major battles. In 1944 the Reno was torpedoed and could not continue in the war. The crew had to abandon ship and was submerged in water for two (2) hours before being picked up by a Destroyer. Bob received several war medals.
Recently he was photographed and interviewed for the Library of Congress. He was so excited about this latest development I don’t know if he will ever come back down to earth. His life story will be on the Internet in about three (3) months.
A man of 85 whose only dream was to learn how to read is now going to be archived in the Library of Congress. I believe his dream has come true . Starting on the long path on learning how to read started this wonderful man's dream to come true .
Congratulations Robert H. Perez. You are achieving and surpassing your dream at age 85.
