Oh the thrill of taking your very own grandchild on your first adventure together. I was privileged recently to be able to take my 4 year old grandson to the zoo.
It was his first trip to the zoo and the first trip that did not include his parents. It was his first huge step toward independence - and my first step in being a grandmother.
We had the opportunity to spend time and an adventure together. When we took our first adventure together we were not alone. My daughter and friends made up a nice size group. My 4 year old was at first shy with my friends but loosened up after we were all in the same boat sweating in the 3 digit heat wave.
He was nicely hidden from the sun in a stroller while we the adults melted with every step. My little one had a great time seeing all the animals close up and he startled me by all his constant exciting talking. He has an older sister and several brothers; he mostly let them do all the talking for him.
Our group stopped for lunch and cooled down before our next walking adventure. It was great to ask my grandson what would you like for lunch and you get to pick whatever you like from the menu. Spoiling goes along with being a grandparent and I relished in it. I found when I had my grandson with me, I am extra cautious. I can not relax thinking there is danger lurking all around us.
I am constantly in fear of his falling and getting hurt. Kidnapping always looms largely in my mind more so than when my own children were little. I am constantly on my toes watching out for his safety. When my daughter and I are ready to leave the zoo and return him to his wonderful parents, I am exhausted and he is still talking about his adventure and ready for another one.
