Hats are to be worn at all general sessions, Victorian attire optional. The general sessions are held in: September, November, January, March, and May. The annual summer June Tea is the only fundraiser and open to the public. The October Garden Tea and the annual Christmas Tea is in December and are for members only.
Do you like to wear a hat? When I think of wearing hats I think of Queen Elizabeth and the hat controversy she and Diana had over the years. When Diana was first married she wore hats then the novelty of pleasing the Queen diminished.
Last June a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go to a tea party. I said sure it sounds like fun. My sister Dena was visiting at the time and she managed to get a ticket for her also. We all got dressed up meaning of course no jeans or pants. When we arrived downtown at the Tea I didn’t have any idea what it was about or what organization was putting this on. But I soon learned a great deal.
First off one of the hostesses had an array of hats in all different sizes and shapes and we were asked to pick one to wear for the tea party. Immediately putting on this cut hat I felt different almost like a character in a role.
It was not a tea party but a fashion show and a history lesson.
There were probably 200 women at this tea. The women dressed in Victorian dresses, hats, shoes and purses. Most of them made their own clothes. They had a fashion show and told the history of the dresses and accessories they were wearing.
I was entertained and educated all in one afternoon and I joined. I joined for several reasons.
I would make new friends.
I would learn history of the Victorian Age
I would learn about the clothing and accessories of that age.
Go to a lot of tea parties
And interconnect with many, many women. A great place for product marketing.
There Christmas party with gift exchange was a big occasion. It is looked forward to and planned all year round. Of course, I wanted to go to this party.
I was in a dilemma I didn’t have a Victorian dress or hat. The president of the Victorian Ladies Society said, “just wear a dress.” I wanted to wear a hat to feel at least partly Victorian but I didn’t know where to get a hat. I went to Target and tried on every which they had that I thought would work. They had a poor assortment of hats. It goes to show hats are not the in thing now. I bought this hat with a gray felt border. It looked more like a man’s dress hat than a woman’s hat. I know it doesn’t look Victorian but it was a hat.
I still needed a Victorian hat for the various teas and meetings throughout the year but I couldn’t afford to think about i.
I went to my church to a singles Christmas party and we had a gift exchange. Now you know at these gift exchanges you never get anything you like or can use. I received two very heavy soup mugs. Great just what I needed.
Then to my amazement a man of about 85 stood up and said look what I got in the gift exchange. To my amazement he was wearing a white Victorian Hat with white feathers.
Gorgeous. Just what I needed. I grabbed my loot and ran over to the guy and asked if he wanted an exchange. He said yes immediately and handed me my hat.
He came over to me later and said his wife collects mugs.
What can I say about Christmas Miracles. They do sometimes happen. I was absolutely delighted with my new Victorian Hat.
