Are you surprised when a child who does not have any parents or family is sent to live with foster parents and they are difficult to handle? Why do you think this is? First of all you are taking a child from somewhere they are at least a little bit accustomed to and out of the blue a social worker shows up at the door and says, "Get your things you are going to another home to live."
Many times the child's family was killed and there were not any relatives to take them in. Their siblings could be split up into several families. Their parents could have been on drugs or alchole.
What do you think goes through these kids minds/ Hopelessness, rage at not having control over their own lives, also, the fear of the unknown.
When the child finally arrives at their new home of residence they have to become familiar with a new set of adults other siblings. The home is strange the people are strange, their bedroom is strange and the food could be strange.
The rules of the house could sound like a foreign language to a child. This child may start to act out immediately upon arrival becoming aggressive, argumentative and downright a brat.
The poor child has had the little bit of security ripped out from under him/her. The child is now floundering on a wavy ocean. The child may feel a drift in a large ocean.
It will take a long time days, weeks or months for this child to become oriented with their new home and family. Unfortunately, when this does happen and the child becomes comfortable in their new family, and environment. The child can become uprooted again and the process of adjusting to a new home and family will start all over again.
Please think of this when you are confronted with this situation. Be compassionate and think what you would feel if you were in the child's situation.
