Reading to a young child not only helps their mental development, but it also teaches the child to sit still. This will be one of the best things they ever learn when they start school to be able to sit for long periods of time without getting restless and turning off their brain.
Also reading to a child helps the child develop a vocabulary and to be able to use his/her imagination to follow you in the story. Depending upon the age of the child, you can stop in a most adventures part of the story and ask your child what the story is about. Who is his/her favorite character and why? Have your child explain it to you in his/her own words. Ask some questions and see what the response is.
You can always ask your child if he/she likes the ending of the story and how would he/she like to end the story. Let your child tell you about how he/she thinks the story should have ended. This is the most powerful tool you will ever have in teaching your child, concentration, vocabulary and to be able to sit still for long periods of time.
While reading to your child you also have a one on one time. Depending upon the age of the child you can have your child sit in your lap and cuddle, cuddle, cuddle. Or sit next to your in a chair or couch and you can put your arm around him/her or have your child lean up against you. Reading to your child starting at a young age is a bond between you and your child that is very special.
It will give your child the love of books reading and writing. What other gift can you ever give your child than the gift for reading and writing?
