It isn't just earthquakes shifting bedrock these days - it's a seismic paradigm shift in thinking.
Seismic Paradigm
When bedrock moves, it sets off a sharp series of after effects. Last December, it was the movement of bedrock beneath the Indian Ocean and the tsunami as one of the after effects. When the bedrock is an idea, the tsunami’s can really get huge.
A bedrock world-view for centuries is shifting: People are the product of their environment (a.k.a. materialism.)
Consider how much of our culture is based on the belief that if a person has a better house, has more money, takes this medicine, wears these clothes, attends this school, lives in this area, etc., the s/he will be happy. Improve the situation around a person and the person improves. Abolish the McDonalds and people will not over eat. How long, and how much energy has been diverted to this belief?
A lesser bedrock idea, not quite as old, is that people are mainly a product of their biology. Genetics. It doesn’t matter where you are, it matters who your parents are. Your personality, most behaviors, and experiences are determined by genetics. This one has been a big hit of late – “hey, I can’t help it, bad genes!”
Consider, though, the children. I suspect that you are familiar with the following scenario: Same parents, same home, same neighborhood, same schools, same church (or lack thereof), but two (or three, or four…) totally different personalities and experiences.
One child is outgoing, capable and joyful; another is a thief and destructive person; a third is always ill. If the environment was causal, then each child should have grown up similar since the environment was equivalent for each. That’s not the case. Must be biology! Same parents, same genetic pool, therefore each child should be similar. Not.
It’s self evident that although a person’s genes and the physical environment provide influence, they are not ruling or determining factors. The earthquakes shifting bedrock thinking reveal what for many is obvious: As a person thinks, so is s/he.
Although the realization may appear “new” and revolutionary, it’s simply a truth that has been known for all times. In the Western experience it is condensed in Matthew 15:11: “ (It is) not that which entereth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”
Jesus explained that what is in a person’s heart (expectations) that comes out of the mouth (speech) that determines experience. In order to speak, one must first conjur the symbols and words to express and idea or thought. Therefore, it is thinking that is the ruling and determining force. For better or not better.
In a sense, it doesn’t matter what the environment is, or what the genetic history is, or what the food is (unclean), these are not the factors creating personal circumstance. It’s a reassuring lesson – an environmental “rags” to “spiritual” riches possibility.
So why would anyone desperately cling to the environmentalism and/or genetic determinism as the ruling force in life? That’s a good discussion, far beyond the few words available here. I suspect, however, such resistance is rooted in the fear of responsibility for experiences. I don’t like my life therefore, it must be someone, something else at fault - I am a helpless victim. It’s a journey to the lowest common denominator of misery shared equally.
For many, a really threatening statement goes something like this: If you are unhappy with your life, change your thinking. But if a person can’t, won’t, or don’t change the thinking, the law of attraction will continue matching vibration to vibration and the misery is recreated over, and over, and over. . .
On the other hand, what a liberating concept! I can change my thinking, and hence, my life experience. So, happy surfing on the crest of this conceptual tsumani (or, really, really brace yourself!)
