A phantom came to dad's door. He named it P.D., short for Parkinson's Disease
A phantom came to dad's door nearly 23 years ago an never left. My dad calls this phantom, P.D., short for Parkinson's Disease. He never knows when its shadow will cast its darkness over his body. It can be early in the morning, during lunch or in the middle of the night. But one thing is for certain, the phantom will strike daily, usually several times. Dad doesn't have the shaking symptoms with his disease, but he has a severe stiffening that when it hits, makes him look like a corpse sitting in a chair. Moments, minutes or hours later, the phantom will go to sleep and turn control back over t dad, but just for a little while. During these moments, my dad returns and does the things he loves to do like ride a bike, write a story or talk a walk. The threat of the phantom is always there and ready to cast a darkness on my dad's body and mind. For many years, my dad fought the phantom from entering his mind but the phantom is getting stronger and laying claim to my dad's memory and commons sense. There is no way to fight the phantom only learn to live with it and treasure the moments when it sleeps.
