Sorry folks, but this is an internet myth, a hoax, circulating since at least 2004. It's taken in a lot of good people, but it's a fiction based on a poor recollection instead of fact.

You can check Snopes or Urban Legend fact check sites, or if you'd prefer, just look to pearlharbor.org (or the National Archives web site, etc.) to find the exact text, which shows that the WWII Memorial engraved quote is exactly correct, and that the words 'so help us God' appear not in the quoted sentence but later in the speech, to wit:

"But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the People when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our People - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God."

I am sorely afraid that many historical details have been changed or even deleted to serve the political "needs" of those approving the final draft of what goes into the histories. A fascinating best-seller could be published on this one topic, and the research would be spell-binding. There is a rule in journalism circles: "That which is not reported - did not happen."

Thanks for the info, on the Nam wall is nowhere Roosevelt, but there are a few names missing too, quite a few.
Who gave them the right to delete before the engravers went to work?

Mark, Somebody needs to be brought to the public's attention as a bigot. Then the attorney general needs to check if there is a hate crime involved here.
